5 Data Signals That Tell You an Idea Is Worth Pursuing

Every founder thinks their idea is great. Data disagrees with most of them. Here are five signals that actually predict viability.

1. Rising search volume with low content saturation

Growing demand + few quality results = opportunity. This is the sweet spot. People are searching, but nobody's serving them well yet.

2. Willingness to pay above $0

It sounds obvious, but many founders target audiences that expect free solutions. If comparable products charge money and people pay, your market exists.

3. Competitor funding without market dominance

When competitors have raised capital but no single player owns >30% market share, the market is validated but not locked up. There's room.

4. Specific audience with identifiable channels

"Everyone" is not an audience. If you can name the subreddits, newsletters, conferences, and communities where your audience gathers, you can reach them affordably.

5. Timing indicators point to "now"

Regulatory changes, technology shifts, cultural moments — external forces that create urgency. "This will be big someday" is not a signal. "This is becoming possible/necessary right now" is.

The meta-signal

The strongest indicator of all: when multiple signals align simultaneously. One positive signal is interesting. Three or more pointing in the same direction is a genuine opportunity.

proofnest's reports evaluate all five signals automatically, so you don't have to piece it together from a dozen different tools.
